A Plumbers Life

Sunday, January 29, 2006

Its been a long week, or at least it felt like a very long week. Going to the gym at 6 oclock in the morning has been getting easier and I feel like I have more energy at the job sites. I'll give it a couple more weeks before I pass judgement.

Time to get philosophical. Life is a wonderful thing. It can send you on some of the wildest adventures imaginable and it can mess you up, or sometimes both. The thing is, for all the experiences life presents us, those experiences isolate us. Even if the experience is shared, we all see things differently. I guess the only common ground we all share, is that we are all on our own. Now dont get me wrong, although it seems to come across as bleak, it's quite the opposite. Sometimes sharing can be very self defeatist.

Anyway, I've got to finish a job tomorrow or I'll be over my quoted 20 hours. I think I'll take some pics to post here (yes I know, I've said it all before). This was an old warehouse that has been renovated into some smaller offices and now the heating system (hydronic) cant distribute the heat properly.

Onto tomorrow.

Back and feeling better

I went to the gym last week to start to look better for my sisters wedding this september. I've been debating if I should post a before picture here or not. We'll see.

I went down to my fathers home to look at installing a new instantaneous hot water heater in his basement. I think we'll install it next weekend. It should save him a whack of cash in gas expenses. It kind of sucks though that you only get 5.2 GPM out of it but I guess theyll work with what their given.

I lost a bet with a fellow from work and now I have to wear this rather outrageous outfit to work tomorrow. I can just imagine the look on my customers face when I show up in a pink jump suit. I can just picture it. "Hello, I'm here to fix your plumbing." as the lady slams the door.

Well I guess I better go and cook dinner.

Asbestos contamination

I get this call today to service an old Wiel McClain Boiler circa 1971. The heat exchangers are in really bad shape and have so much soot between the sections that the flame is rolling out of the burn chamber and halfway up the side of the boiler. I condemn it and and call the shop. The boss tells me to tear it apart and clean it up so these people can get some heat this evening. After removing the access plate from the front of the boiler I notice that the front of the sections are covered in soot and a whitish substance. Asbestos or also known as chrysotile. My boss informs me that its not asbestos and I should just continue cleaning the system.

I spent hole day cleaning this boiler and now wonder if my actions were foolish. Reports say that long term exposure can lead to health issues. I wonder what long term means... A day? A week? More?.. I guess I'll find out soon enough.

I'm not going back to that hole tomorrow, they can find some other idiot.

Bryan Adams

Well, I spent the weekend recovering from hangover. Some friends and I went out to see Bryan Adams in Red Deer yesterday. It was a great show; absolutely fantastic. The only bad thing was that he commented on how this was his 25th year performing. Am I that old? Not only that, but I knew every song and every lyric, meanwhile the 16 year old in front of us didnt know who he was.
Ah well... the copious amount of alcohol made it all ok.

Back to work tomorrow.

What a day, the work load wsnt too bad, but the choice to join a gym has left me rather stiff and sore. It seems that I'm unable to walk much. I imagine the morning will be worse.

I think that next week I'm going to start posting pictures of my daily jobs. It should make the postings more interesting.

Too many hours

I'm exhausted. I've pulled more hours these last two weeks than I pulled all of last month. The trades are a need of more qualified people but it would appear that the only people out there are apprentices. Ah well, I'll just keep thinking of the money I'm making (the government).

Lets see, what all did I do today.... My first call was to auger a drain line in an older part of Calgary. I was fortunate that I didnt have to use "the pig". The "pig" is this old auger that has been around longer than dirt. Its a real pain to use so I was quite heppy when I was able to clear the line with the smaller Marco automatic auger. Its a nice unit and its fairly light wieght.

I've decided ot join a Gym as my mid section is getting larger. That and my sister is getting married in Maui this September so I want to look my best. Not sure if I can pull it off (getting in shape I mean) but I guess we'll see.

Well... Its brief and to the point but thats it.

Another day. I started work this morning at 6:30 and I'm just getting home at 9:00 pm. Oh well it will be good for the overtime. I couldnt get in to install the hot water tank till 6:00PM so the day dragged abit. Tomorrow I have to shut down a 20 story apartment complex to work on the domestic water lines and install some new faucets.

A start to publicly posting plumbing poop.

So, its Sunday and I have to go back to work tomorrow. Install a hot water tank first thing. Its only a 4o gallon so it should only take an hour or so...I'll probably book more...

Didn't do much today. I went out to my Dads place and we worked on the bike we bought together. Its an old CB400T (79). Should be great to run come this spring. Might even get to ride it earlier i the weather holds out. Its usually alot colder by this time of year. I'm not complaining though.

Well thats it for today.
